Welcome

Salve! We are a small group of five individuals taking part in the Classical Studies program at the University of Otago. We are a mix of third and higher years, looking into the Julio-Claudian family, under the brilliant guidance of Dr Gwynaeth McIntyre. As an assessment for the paper CLAS344: From Augustus to Nero: Scandal and Intrigue in Imperial Rome, we have created this website as an exhibition on the imperial coins and mintage of the imperial Roman family. These coins were used in various ways to show the intended line of succession, who the imperial family placed honours upon, and who was in favour at the time. Out of all the Julio-Claudian coins housed in the Otago Museum, we have selected just these four, as they show the importance of the relatives and family of the emperor in politics. We also have been creating and researching small projects related to numismatics and the use of coins throughout the first semester of 2020. We tried to create a site that would be informative and interesting for the public, as well as being familiar with those well versed on the subject.

We would like to thank the Otago Museum for allowing us to use their collection of coins, as well as for allowing us to utilise their store of high-quality images. We would also like to thank Dr Charlotte Dunn for creating these high-quality images, and Dr Gwynaeth McIntyre for introducing us to Omeka and for sharing her knowledge of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, numismatics and Classics as a whole.
